Why Star Trek Beyond Wasn't A Box Office Hit, According To Simon Pegg
Since 2009, the Star Trek films have been following the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise crew as they explore strange new worlds and all that jazz in an alternate timeline. 2016 brought the third entry of this reboot series, Star Trek Beyond, and while critically it was well received, commercially it underwhelmed, making only $343.5 million worldwide off a $185 million budget. As Simon Pegg, who reprised Scotty in Beyond and co-wrote the screenplay, sees it, the reason the movie failed to pick up traction at the box office is because it was poorly marketed ahead of time. In Pegg's words:
I think it was poorly marketed, to be honest. If you look at a film like Suicide Squad, that was around for such a long time before it finally came out and people were so aware of it. Whereas with Star Trek Beyond, it was left too late before they started their marketing push. It still did great business, but it was disappointing compared to Into Darkness.
Of the three Star Trek reboot movies, Beyond is the one that performed the worst commercially. While they were both also made off a $185 million budget, Star Trek walked away with $385.7 million worldwide, while Into Darkness collected $467.4 million worldwide. While Beyond did release a teaser trailer in December of 2015, seven months before the movie arrived in theaters, Simon Pegg's comments to Screen Geek indicate that he was disappointed overall with Paramount's marketing push for Beyond. The use of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" was certainly an unusual choice for that first trailer, and even though it was eventually revealed that the song was actually important to the story, Pegg was disappointed that this was indirectly spoiled through that preview. Beyond's marketing also didn't play into the fact the movie was being released the same year as the franchise's 50th anniversary, so maybe that might have helped improve its box office haul.
Even with Star Trek Beyond not making the big bucks, the Star Trek film series is moving forward. Shortly before Beyond's release, it was officially announced that Star Trek 4 would see Chris Pine's James Kirk meeting his father George, who was played by Chris Hemsworth in Star Trek and died only minutes after James was worn in this alternate timeline. However, last December, Paramount and Bad Robot hired Mark L. Smith to write a screenplay based on an idea that director Quentin Tarantino pitched, and if this particular movie goes forward, Tarantino would direct. Perhaps Beyond's box office return made the studio bigwigs think that the film series needs to branch off in a new direction, but for right now, there hasn't been any official word on which of the two projects will get the green light.

The Meg Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Big Shark Movie
Movie reviews are an interesting thing because a review is ultimately only the opinion of a single writer. Here at CinemaBlend, we write reviews, but we also have a lot of other people who have seen the exact same movie and might have very different opinions compared to what gets expressed in the official review. Starting this week we're going to give everybody at CinemaBlend a chance to sound off on the major releases, beginning with The Meg.
First, we'll start with the official CinemaBlend response to the Jason Statham versus a prehistoric shark movie. Senior Movie Contributor Mike Reyes wrote our review and overall he didn't care for The Meg all that much, feeling that, while the film was as dumb as the premise implied, it wasn't nearly as much fun as it should have been.
In the process of attempting to make The Meg a movie full of stupid fun, they forgot to have fun, but stayed square in the lane of stupid.
For the most part, however, Mike is actually an outlier when it comes to The Meg. While Events Editor Eric Eisenberg admits that he found the film somewhat lacking, he overall did enjoy it, embracing it for the fun summer popcorn movie that it was.
The Meg is real stupid fun. I wouldn't say it's everything I wanted it to be, but Jason Statham remains one of my favorite action stars, and there is an on-point self-awareness.
From there, however, we get into the editors who fully enjoyed the movie without any exceptions. Staff reporter Conner Schwerdtfeger felt that The Meg's strength came from the fact that it doesn't try to be too ridiculous, but knows just how much it can get away with.
I can honestly say that I really enjoyed it. It's legitimately well-executed in its tension and action scenes and it 100% knows what type of movie it is without resorting to dumb Sharknado levels of stupidity. Perfect late summer film.
News Director Jessica Rawden also found plenty to enjoy in The Meg. While the premise absolutely feels like something out a B-movie, Jessica says it's one of the best B-movies out there.
The Meg has everything. A cool underwater home base. A precocious kid. Jason Statham taking himself very seriously. And, of course the Meg itself, a prehistoric shark that makes its way to the ocean's surface where it takes on our heroes and heroines. Overall, it's either an A+ B-movie or a B+ A-Movie, but either way you look at it, it's a blast.
Jessica's sentiments are largely echoed by Managing Director Sean O'Connell, who doesn't apologize, even a little, for enjoying The Meg completely. There are clearly differening opinions here about whether The Meg tries to be a serious action movie or an over-the-top spectacle. Sean argues that The Meg actually walks the line between the two with surprising deftness.
The Meg delivers everything that you want out of a 'Jason Statham versus a Giant Shark' movie, so if you are paying for that ticket, you won't leave disappointed. In addition, I'd argue that the movie walks the proper line between goofy creature spoof and serious scientists-in-peril, staging a handful of pulse-racing underwater set pieces that had more tension and chills than like-minded summer blockbusters. This isn't even a guilty pleasure, it's just plain fun.
My own opinion probably falls most in line with Sean's. I loved how the movie took itself seriously, without forcing the audience to try and take the movie seriously. That's a difficult tone to reach which many summer blockbusters, even this year, have failed to achieve.
And so, while the CinemaBlend review gives The Meg 2.5 stars out of five, most of the rest of Team CinemaBlend appears have liked it more than that. It just goes to show that opinions always vary among people. You can form your opinion on The Meg in theaters now.

Brad Bird Shares Some Cool Alternate Story Ideas For Incredibles 2
Pixar has a special way of making movies. When an idea is initially presented, the animators don't just go straight to work bringing it to life. Instead, there is a key collaborative build-up-then-break-down methodology employed, and it winds up seeing projects shape multiple plots over time. The upcoming Incredibles 2 is no exception, and I recently learned from writer/director Brad Bird that there some very different story ideas explored:
The idea that I got greenlit, like, 'Okay, ready to go,' we didn't end up using. It involved A.I. and all kinds of stuff. And then there was another idea that had more of a show-business bent to it that really had a lot of great ideas in it, but it wasn't enough stress on the family to make it so that it was... it made them shallow. And so we wound up with the story we wound up with, which had little bits of the other stories, but it just kind of went its own way.
In the Incredibles 2, Helen Parr a.k.a. Elastigirl winds up facing off against a new hypnotic supervillain who goes by the name Screenslaver -- but that wasn't always going to be the case. As I learned from sitting down with Brad Bird and producer John Walker last week during the film's Los Angeles press day, there were a few plots that were presented and then passed over, including one involving the use of artificial intelligence, and another that saw the Parr family bit by the showbiz bug.
On paper those ideas certainly sound super cool, but as Brad Bird pointed out, the problem was a matter of stakes. The consensus was apparently that the protagonists simply weren't being hit hard enough to develop proper drama. In fact, according to John Walker, it was Pixar director Andrew Stanton who wound up being very influential in this regard. Said the filmmaker,
There was a pivotal screening, maybe a year and a half in, a collection of scenes, but the big note from it was, and I think this was Andrew Stanton's, in order to get Helen out on the mission, stakes have to be higher. There has to be a reason; there has to be a really strong reason for her to do that. And that was like, 'Mmhmm, yup. That's right.' Responding to that was what pulled the movie into where it is now.
Reflecting on the first Incredibles, it's really an important point to make -- especially given the fact that Brad Bird had the mom-dad role reversal as a part of Incredibles 2 from the beginning. In that first film Helen Parr was adamant about not breaking the law and keeping her supersuit in her closet. To have her be super excited to dive back in action and fight crime would have betrayed her character on a certain level. In response to this, the sequel gives her a real reason to be out there, as a poster figure for the removal of the anti-superhero law, and it's all the better for it.
In the discussion of the subject, Brad Bird also ruminated on a funny connection that exists between The Incredibles and Incredibles 2 (beyond all the obvious ones). Much like how Screenslaver was a late addition to the sequel, the first movie apparently had a totally different antagonist in mind, and it was, again, through the collaboration with Pixar that the film wound up improving. Said Bird,
I realized just recently, like last week, that it was kind of like the first movie, because The Incredibles was the only movie that was formed outside of Pixar, and then brought to Pixar. Like, 'You guys wanna make this?' And I came to them with a different villain on the first movie. When we did an alternate opening that we ended up not using, we got a new villain out of it that we all preferred to the one that I came to Pixar with. So Syndrome and Buddy Pine was actually a late arrival to the original movie, and that was what happened with this one with Screenslaver.

Fans will never get to see the versions of Incredibles 2 featuring artificial intelligence and the Parrs going Hollywood -- but the good news is that the end result is still fantastic.
