Mark Hamill Is Having Fun With Fans Over Star Wars Episode IX Casting News

The first news about Star Wars: Episode IX has begun to hit the rumor mill, so you can be sure fans are getting excited. As usual, Mark Hamill is having some fun with that excitement. The Luke Skywalker actor has a sense of humor on par with the Joker and while he clearly loves Star Wars he doesn't mind poking the fans a little in the name of fun. In that vein, he recently posted some "breaking news" regarding the newest piece of casting for the end of the current trilogy, an empty robe.

Mark Hamill is, of course, having some fun with the fact that Luke Skywalker vanished at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. His robe fell to the rock he was sitting on before blowing away. Apparently, the robe will still be important in Episode IX, and director J.J. Abrams has found the perfect robe to play the part.

Of course, the real question fans have is not will we see the robe again, it's will we see the man in the robe again. While Luke Skywalker may have become one with the Force at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, that hardly guarantees that we won't see the character in Episode IX. Alec Guinness spent more time as a force ghost in the original Star Wars trilogy than he did as a living character. Most fans seem to expect that we will see Luke again in one form or another, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The "robe casting" follows on the reveals of other news for the upcoming film that would appear to be more legit. First, we received an apparent confirmation that Billy Dee Williams will return to the Star Wars franchise as Lando Calrissian. More recently it's been reported that one of J.J. Abrams go-to actresses, Keri Russell, has also been cast in the film.

With filming set to get underway soon, we'll very likely get at least a few official confirmations from Lucasfilm regarding casting, even though we likely won't get a lot of other details. With J.J. Abrams back at the helm as writer and director, we can expect the entire film will be placed inside Abrams' famed "mystery box" meaning that we'll get even less information than we otherwise might.

Andy Serkis' Mowgli Has Music, Just Not The Songs You Might Expect

If I were to mention The Jungle Book to you, your gut reaction might be to start singing The Bare Necessities, or whistling I Wan'Na Be Like You. Totally understandable. Because of the animated version of The Jungle Book that came out in 1967, Walt Disney has cornered the market on recognizable versions of Rudyard Kipling's classic novel. The 2016 live-action version, directed by Jon Favreau, also made use of the sing-along songs, putting them back in the conversation. So when we interviewed Andy Serkis recently about his upcoming interpretation of the material, Mowgli, we jokingly asked if he had songs, and his answer was honest and surprising! Serkis said:

The animals are not singing. There are some songs. [Laughs] Because we spend a considerable amount of time in the village with the humans. The context for our movie is very much sort of Colonial India, at the turn of the century. The Indian village has ritual. Part of Mowgli's journey is assimilating into the world of man, where there are customs and rituals, and we begin to see him deal with, mildly, what a Holi Festival is like. Well, you see that in the trailer. So there is, there's definitely music. And the score is beautiful in fact, and it's written and composed by an Anglo Indian composer, [a] world musician, Nitin Sawhney. So music is very much a part of it. But there is no 'Bare Necessities.' No king of the Swingers. [Laughs]

The Holi Festival, an Indian tradition, does surface in the new trailer for Mowgli, which just arrived. This is a mature take on Kipling's story, a live-action interpretation that follows the journey of a boy named Mowgli (Rohan Chand) who fights for survival while growing up in the jungle. And yet, as you can see in the tease, there are important human parts played by Freida Pinto and Matthew Rhys, who will be integral to Mowgli's arc. Here, give the Mowgli trailer a viewing:

The music isn't the only difference between previous Disney takes on this material and the version Andy Serkis will release later this year in Mowgli. As we discussed his vision further, Serkis told CinemaBlend:

I think that's the other thing that's different about this movie is that it doesn't rely on the adults, or the animals. They're there, but they are supporting [Mowgli's] story. We don't take huge diversions to enjoy, you know, a moment or two with characters unless it's absolutely fundamental to the story. And that's what keeps it kind of edgy really, I think, is that it really is, as I say, you're with him on his journey

An Eagle-Eyed Fan Spotted A Fun Crossover Between Captain America And Thor

Marvel movies are always jam-packed with easter eggs, and while some of them are easy to spot, others are so tough to find that they don't surface until years after the movie comes out. People are still trying to find that final Guardians of the Galaxy easter egg, and now a fan has spotted a small crossover detail that connects the first Thor and Captain America films. Namely, both movies feature the same location of Tonsberg, Norway, which just so happens to be the town where the Red Skull found the Tesseract. Take a look.

Marvel was still figuring out its shared universe during Phase One, but the studio was able to draw connections between those early movies in the lead up to The Avengers. Some movies do this a bit more obviously like Iron Man 2 or Hawkeye appearing in Thor. Other times you get some harder-to-spot easter eggs like what we have today.

One fan by the name of comrade_batman posted to Reddit some picture from Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. The pics show that Odin's battle against the Frost Giants in a Thor flashback takes place in Tonsberg, Norway in 965 A.D. Not a very major detail by itself, though trivia nuts may know that Tonsberg is said to be the oldest town in Norway and was founded by Vikings. That's a fun real-world fact, plus we know the MCU's Tonsberg is hiding a supernatural secret. The town appears again in Captain America: The First Avenger when the Red Skull and Hydra invade. Tonsberg is where the Tesseract, later revealed to be the Space Stone, is hidden.

This crossover between two movies was hidden right in plain sight, as the name of the town is placed right there on the screen for people to read. Still, it's a pretty fun connection of the variety that MCU fans love to eat up. It makes sense that Odin would choose Tonsberg as the location of the Tesseract, seeing as how he has so much history with the town. He probably thought the Infinity Stone would be well hidden on earth, which ultimately ended up not being the case.

Fans will have to tide themselves over with more behind-the-scenes hunts because it's going to be a while before the next Marvel movie hits theaters. The next MCU movie is Captain Marvel, which doesn't arrive until March 8, 2019.
