First Look At Shazam's Billy Batson Includes Superman And Batman Easter Eggs

One of the elements that's made Shazam (previously known as Captain Marvel) such an enduring superhero over the decades is the fact that his civilian identity is Billy Batson, an adolescent. A lot of kids imagine being a superhero, so Billy being able to transform into the adult Shazam is the ultimate wish fulfillment. The character is finally making his big screen debut next year in (you guessed it) Shazam!, and while the movie's tone may be different than earlier DC Extended Universe movies, rest assured that it will take place in the same continuity. The latest Shazam! picture hammers this point home, as there are numerous references to Superman and Batman.

This is our first look at Asher Angel's Billy Batson in Shazam!, where he's seen holding a bag containing a crushed bullet that has a certificate of authentication. Judging by the Superman ball cap, the Superman cups, the TIME magazine cover showing Superman and the Daily Planet newspaper clipping about Superman's return, it's easy enough to deduce that the bullet is one that struck the Man of Steel, hence why it's certified to be legit. As for Batman, not only is there a figurine of the Gotham City vigilante on display, there's also a genuine Batarang that belonged to the Dark Knight on display. However, it's not Billy who's the Batman, Superman and all-around Justice League fanboy, but rather Jack Dylan Grazer's Freddy Freeman, the other kid in the picture. So you can imagine how Freddy will react when he learns that his new friend Billy can turn into a superhero.

Along with providing this picture, EW spoke with Asher Angel about his version of Billy Batson in Shazam! Like his comic book counterpart, Billy's parents died when he was young, making growing up especially difficult. Angel explained:

He's misunderstood, he's mischievous, he's been a foster kid since he was 5 years old and really has no one to trust.

While the Shazam! movie is pulling from various eras of the hero's history, the main story looks like it's mainly inspired by Shazam's New 52 origin story, namely by how Billy Batson is sent to live with a foster family that includes Freddy, Grace Fulton's Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen's Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand's Pedro Pea and Faithe Herman's Darla Dudley. That's a big change for any kid, but for Billy, that's just the tip of the iceberg. After his encounter with the mysterious Wizard, Billy will be able thetotransform into Shazam, the World's Mightiest Mortal, but he won't have long to master his special powers, as he'll soon face off against the sinister Doctor Thaddeus Sivana.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been hard at work on a script that would turn the popular Metal Gear Solid video game franchise into a big screen movie. However, it turns out that's not the only video game he has ideas for. Recently, the director of Kong: Skull Island revealed that he also has a pitch for a Metroid movie, though even he admits the likelihood of that one becoming real one day is pretty unlikely. According to Vogt-Roberts...

I have a pitch for a Metroid movie. They'll never let me do it. It's too crazy... It legitimately would be [Samus] alone. It would be a little bit of her talking to herself. As soon as they introduce other talking characters in those games, to me it loses everything. You put her alone and it's almost got a little bit more to do with the silence of a movie like Drive. Like the quietness and having it be like a real, intense mood piece, but mixed with sci-fi.

The vast majority of the Metroid video games don't have other characters of consequence other than Samus Aran, the protagonist who is controlled by the player. The games are traditionally a mix of third or first person shooting combined with platforming. As the player progresses through the alien world of the game, different weapons and items are obtained which can then be used to get to previously unreachable parts of the game world.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts tells IGN that he appreciates the isolation that comes from playing Metroid games, the feeling that you're alone in a very hostile place. He would love to make a movie that focused on that feeling of isolation. The only problem is that a movie that only had a single isolated character would have little to no dialogue, which is something most studios likely wouldn't be interested in. It's not that the movie wouldn't have people speaking, like A Quiet Place. Most Metroid games literally don't have another character for Samus to communicate with at all.

There have been games which changed up this formula, but as Jordan Vogt-Roberts says, those lose a lot. The less said about Metroid: Other M the better.

It certainly seems like getting a nearly silent Metroid movie greenlit would be a long shot at best. If you could get away with making it a small movie there might be a chance, but as the missile-blasting science fiction story that Metroid ultimately is, it would seem that a larger budget would be necessary.

Nintendo hasn't let its major properties be turned into movies since the abomination that was the Super Mario Bros. movie, but with the news that a new animated Mario Bros. movie is in development, perhaps conversations about a Metroid film could happen at some point. Though, even if that happens, it likely won't look like this.

Sister Act 3 Is Happening On Disney's Streaming Service

Disney is working on building up its upcoming streaming service, Disney+, into a powerhouse right out of the gate. In addition to original series based around Marvel and Star Wars, the streaming service will reportedly be the home for the long-rumored Sister Act 3. However, this comes with a major caveat -- because Whoopi Goldberg reportedly won't be involved with the new film.

First arriving in theaters in 1992, Sister Act follows Delores, a Reno lounge singer who witnesses her mob boss boyfriend commit a murder. She enters witness protection and is placed with a new identity in a convent in San Fransisco. Delores learns to adjust to her drastically new lifestyle, making friends with the nuns while bringing nationwide fame to the convent's choir.

The original was pretty successful, scoring $231 million worldwide. It was closely followed by a sequel in one year later, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. This time Delores is brought back to the convent to help teach the music class for a down-on-its-luck Catholic school.

Twenty-five years after the release of the sequel, Disney is trying to revive the franchise with Sister Act 3. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new film will join the Disney+ streaming service. Regina Hicks, an executive producer on HBO's Insecure, and Karin Gist, showrunner of Fox's Star, are writing the script for the film.

However, this story will not include Whoopi Goldberg or her character Delores. The actresses reps released a statement that Goldberg would not be involved because Sister Act 3 is "not a continuation." So, it seems that Sister Act 3 will tell the story of a whole new character for a new generation of viewers to enjoy.

This is not entirely new information, as Whoopi Goldberg had previously said in September that Disney was moving in a new direction with Sister Act 3 and she likely wouldn't have much involvement. It's not really correct to call it Sister Act 3, so we'll just have to wait until Disney offers a new tile for us to reference.

There's no word on a release window for the new Sister Act film, but Disney+ is on track to launch later in 2019. The streaming service is building up quite the library, which includes shows for Avengers characters like Loki and Scarlet Witch, a Rogue One prequel series, a live-action Lady and the Tramp film, and Anna Kendrick's female Santa film.

The Earliest Twilight Script Was Crazy Different, According To Catherine Hardwicke

Mention the word Twilight, and the image of pale yet glittery vampires with a Pacific Northwest backdrop immediately comes to mind. But if the studio originally got its way, the word "Twilight" might have conjured images of Jet skis, CIA agents and an all-star athlete named Bella. Wait, what? Original Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke recently explained to CinemaBlend:

The [initial] script that I read had gone through the whole development process at MTV and Paramount. And you get all these notes -- nobody's fault or anything -- but you get notes, and you try this, you try this. So it had veered very far from the book, and so I did not like it at all. And no studio wanted to make it. And so Paramount put it into it turnaround.[Bella] was a track star in the first scene, not an every-girl kind of awkward and clumsy [kid]... she was like a bad ass, and then it escalated into this whole thing where there were CIA agents on jet skis trying to find the vampires, you know. It really went, 'Whooooo!' She was not working for the CIA, but it was a different movie.

This sounds something more in line with the Charlie's Angels reboot that Kristen Stewart currently is filming, and not at all in line with Twilight, the story of a shy and reserved teenage girl named Bella who finds her voice in a relationship with a vampire, Edward. And certainly not in line with what Twilight author Stephenie Meyer conceived in her initial book.

Published in 2005, Twilight introduced readers to the star-crossed couple of Bella and Edward, soul mates destined to met even though she was a timid high schooler and he was a 104-year-old vampire. The series, over the years, has sold more than 120 million copies, proving that Meyer's vision for this passionate romance had support.

What would that fan base have thought if the drastic changes made to the Twilight concept had remained in the initial script? Likely, there would have been riots, and instant rejection of the feature-film adaptation. And that would have instantly unplugged a five-movie franchise that eventually totaled a whopping $3.3 billion in global ticket sales.

This can all be traced back to Catherine Hardwicke, who stood firm and fought to return the script for the original Twilight to the roots of Stephenie Meyer's novel. During our exclusive chat, she told CinemaBlend:

When I read the book, I said, let's go to the heart of why people love his book, you know? It's this romantic, crazy, out of control, you know, the first time you fell in love, stupid passion that you have for somebody that's totally wrong, but she doesn't give a shit! And that's what makes us alive. Let's find that life force, where you will do reckless, crazy things because you know, you're somebody. So that's what I wanted in there. So we got rid of the jet skis. [laughs]

That was the right decision. Twilight connected with a massive audience, leading into numerous sequels including Twilight: New Moon and a two part Breaking Dawn. When did Catherine Hardwicke realize that she had touched a nerve? She tells CinemaBlend that it happened on opening weekend, as she recalls the reaction of the audience, and of a famous fan. Said Hardwicke:

I just heard from Eli Roth, because I'm working on a project with him, that Quentin Tarantino, on camera, said in an interview that Twilight made him feel like he was like a 13 year old girl, and that he loved it. That is awesome. That's kind of funny and hilarious. And that's exactly what I was trying to do. ...Opening night, I was in Austin [on opening weekend] at the Ale house and they were like, 'Oh yeah, just pop in to the different screenings.' And so I started to pop into one, and then I was mobbed. I mean, I'm not even an actor. I'm like, 'Why am I being mobbed?' A girl fainted in my arms, that I was there. I was like, 'Oh Gosh. Oh Wow. Okay. This is a big deal!'

And it continues to be a big deal. We spoke with Catherine Hardwicke as Twilight was returning to theaters in celebration of its 10th anniversary. As such, Twilight will play in more than 450 movie theaters nationwide Sunday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 23, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (local time).
