The Romantic Comedy Matthew McConaughey Still Makes The Most Money From

Matthew McConaughey may have branched out into a lot of oddball film and TV roles in recent years. However, the actor still makes a lot of cashola from some of the projects earlier in his career, namely of the rom-com variety. He revealed in an interview that it is actually How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days that still leads to the most checks in the mail. Per McConaughey:

So How to Lose a Guy, you mentioned earlier how much its on. That film has been my greatest mailbox money of any film. It is always on and theres always this great little check that shows up in the mail from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I did that however many years ago!

This quote from Serenitys Matthew McConaughey is really revealing. When we think about actors salaries, we often think about the initial payout an actor gets for filming a movie. Sometimes we may even think of additional brand ambassadorships and ads that add to the cume total of an actors wealth. But its less often that we think about residual checks for movies that are still making money through home entertainment forums.

While speaking out to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Matthew McConaughey also rated his rom-coms from best to worst. Unsurprisingly, hes pretty pumped about How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days due to the money it still earns him. Next, hes down with Failure to Launch.

Sadly, hes less excited about The Wedding Planner, the Jennifer Lopez comedy that features him falling in love with another woman when hes already engaged to be married. We get it. That brown m&ms scene though.

Its not surprising to me that rom-coms in general do well via DVD and Blu-ray sales, cable releases and even streaming. They are exactly the sort of movie that people will throw on over and over again on cable and streaming platforms. In fact, Matthew McConaughey previously revealed he was loving the part of his career where he kept churning out rom-coms, that is, until he realized it was slowing his ambition and drive in the industry.

Actors receive residual checks for movies and TV shows all the time. If you are in a popular movie or TV project, you could earn more many than you think. Last year, a Titanic actor who has one line in the movie revealed he still makes $200- $300 in residuals from the movie. Former MLB Player Keith Hernandez, who appeared in several Seinfeld episodes still makes a whopping $3,000 a year from the heavily syndicated series.

So, Id assume How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days mailbox money is a pretty nice check to open up every once and awhile.

Jurassic World Box Office: Fallen Kingdom Roars At Number One

When the first Jurassic World was released in 2015, it totally rocked the world at the box office. Not only did it wind up grossing nearly $1.7 billion globally, but it also broke the domestic opening weekend record with a $208.8 million start in its first three days. Now it's sequel, J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has hit theaters, and while it wasn't expected to put up quite the same numbers as its predecessor, it did still manage to make a crazy amount of money from Friday to Sunday. The first Jurassic World had the benefit of the franchise laying dormant for nearly a decade-and-a-half, which ramped up excitement for its return, but Universal Pictures will definitely not be upset with the numbers posted by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It may be about $58 million less, but the film is already a major blockbuster, and positioned to be one of the biggest hits of the year. It's already been in theaters internationally for a few weeks, and it's global total now stands at $711.5 million - already big enough to make it the third most successful film of the year. It still has a long way to go if it is going to catch up to Avengers: Infinity War ($2.03 billion) and Black Panther ($1.3 billion), but it one hell of a start.

Of course, it helps that Hollywood basically cleared out room for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's dominance, as there were no other wide release movies out this week (though I will touch on its second week competition in a minute). As a result, the film was able to outpace expectations, as estimates suggested its haul would be somewhere more in the $135 million range. We'll have to wait and see what kind of legs it has, though, as there are still some big movies coming out in July, and professional critics didn't exactly fall in love with the feature (though it has gotten an "A-" on CinemaScore)

Because there were no other wide releases this week, the most significant competition for the new Jurassic World was Incredibles 2 - which was expected to take a sizeable chunk out of the apple thanks to its stunning $180 million weekend last time around. Clearly the chunk didn't wind up being as big as expected, though Pixar really has nothing to complain about either. The animated superhero movie dropped a modest 55.7% from week one to week two, but that still meant adding $80.9 million to its total. The blockbuster's global total now stands at $485 million, though its key to note that it has not yet been released in Europe or Japan.

Lastly I'll take the time to highlight the performance of Morgan Neville's Won't You Be My Neighbor?, which managed to sneak into the Top 10 this week despite only being out in less than 350 theaters nationwide. That being said, the success isn't too terribly surprising, as the movie has been getting raves everywhere. The documentary tells the story of the life and times of Fred Rogers, the host of the beloved children's program Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, and it is a beautiful delight - highlighting the work of a truly genuine soul. It has an important positive message that one could argue the world very much needs right now, and it's great to see that people are buying tickets to see it on the big screen.

There's a very good chance that we could wind up seeing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom pull a repeat at the box office next week and once again claim the number one spot - but that doesn't mean there aren't some exciting titles on the way. Specifically, this Friday will see screens starting to show the thrilling sequel Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado, and the basketball comedy Uncle Drew. Marvel and DC may be the two biggest names in comic books, but they aren't the only two companies with a library of characters waiting to make it to the big screen. Valiant has a huge catalog of comic books waiting to be tapped and Sony will be the first to make use of it with a movie starring the character Bloodshot. Vin Diesel was recently cast in the role and while the movie is still far off from arriving in theaters, the actor is giving fans an update on what's happening with the movie.

Vin Diesel is already training to bring Bloodshot to the big screen. The actor posted a video update to his Instagram account where he briefly mentioned that he was busy training for Bloodshot. The character is a physically demanding role, being a super-powered soldier who is sent all across the globe for impossible missions. It'll understandably require Diesel to get into tip-top shape like just about every other actor who signs on to play a superhero. Only time will tell exactly what kind of diet Diesel will get stuck with for the next several months.

For those who may not know, Bloodshot is a superhero character from the Valiant comics imprint. The character is a soldier who has cutting-edge nanites in his body that give him a healing factor, allow him to interface with technology, and shape change his mass. They also make his skin chalk white with a red circle on his chest, but that's the price of power, I guess. Bloodshot suffers from amnesia with multiple false memories in his head and he's usually on a quest to find the people that made him the way he is. In this way, he's like a combination of Deadpool and Wolverine.

Bloodshot will be directed by Dave Wilson, Deadpool director Tim Miller's partner at Blur Studios. Word on the street is that the film is gunning for an R-rating in the vein of Deadpool and Logan, and will be tonally and aesthetically influenced by 80s action movies like Robocop and Terminator. The Bloodshot character was previously played by Jason David Frank (aka Tommy the Green Ranger) in a web series. Jared Leto was previously rumored to be in the running to play the lead character.
