Why The Meg Should Have Stuck With An R-Rated Cut

Very few saw The Meg's $44.5 million opening coming. Preliminary estimates pegged the film at an opening closer to $20 million, despite the fact that the film pitching itself to the fan culture that made Sharknado a hit was an obvious key to success. But could it have been a bigger hit in its opening weekend? I certainly think it could have, and it's all down to one particularly big story that's been circulating around the movie over the past week. Director Jon Turteltaub has told folks that there's a bloodier, funnier R-rated cut of The Meg that eventually fell by the wayside, in the name of appealing to a PG-13-sized audience. However, if they'd stayed with that R-rated cut, we might have been looking at a bigger result making the headlines.

With trailers that promised a schlocky, over-the-top experience akin to something you'd see on cable any given weekend, The Meg's PG-13 experience played things too safely. Taking that into account, alongside the self-serious nature The Meg seems to root itself firmly within, it really robbed the film of the sort of movie it's marketing teased it to be. While the finished, theatrical cut of the film has certainly made its fair share of fans (and global dollars), the film's rating does feel like more of a liability than an asset. With all of that in mind, please re-watch the trailer for The Meg that sold us all on the prospect of a big-budget shark fest of carnage, and try to imagine what this would have looked like as an R-rated film.

That trailer promises an all out entertainment experience, with tons of bite and humor. Fine. However, take that version of The Meg and remove the constraints on gore and excitement that a PG-13 blockbuster is usually saddled with. You're left with an uninhibited cut that might deliver a ballsier experience that really goes to the proper extremes a movie such as this requires in order to be truly entertaining. If you're going to make a movie that knowingly wades into the waters of stupid fun, you really do need it to be fun. In the case of The Meg's PG-13 cut, it doesn't go hard enough (in this writer's opinion). And that's not a sentiment that I'm alone in sharing.

Besides Jon Turteltaub's remarks on how an R-rated cut would have been different, we've also got Jason Statham championing the original, more hardcore version of The Meg he supposedly signed on for. Sure, other critics had similar remarks about how this film had a problem with the tone it was trying to nail. That was bound to happen, as this movie had "made for the fans" written all over it. But after hearing The Transporter himself playing up the "radically different" version that was shaped into The Meg's final product, it's truly hard not to want to see this version he's talking up with our own eyes.

If it sold Statham on the project's initial intent, and if director Jon Turteltaub had that much gleeful fun initially creating the film in that image, then why didn't Warner Bros totally steer into that sort of madness? That strategy certainly worked back in 2006, when New Line Cinema released Snakes on a Plane. That film once tried to change its title to something totally different and more serious, prompting star Samuel L. Jackson to reject that move with all the power in his contract. Made for $33 million, the film was memed and talked up all across the internet, turning a simple concept and a ridiculous title into a fan driven, R-rated $62 million hit. For comparison, The Meg was made for $130 million, and has raked in $146 million worldwide through its opening weekend, with some saying that $400 million is the high water mark for the film to break even.

Still, The Meg did overperform domestically this weekend, so in the moment, it can be considered a victory. That said, for the film to truly be a success that breaks even, it's going to have to keep chugging along, chumming the waters for audiences hungry for that last thrill of summer. What better way to make sure the film breaks even than completing an R-rated "Megtactular" cut that could either be re-released to theatrical distributors, or promised to fans who really want to relive the magic on the eventual home video release of the film. Naturally, that'll depend on whether or not Warner Bros believes it's worth the money to finish the sequences dropped in the name of a PG-13 rating. But if they'd kept those sequences in the first place, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Instead, we might have been talking about how The Meg set a new box office record for an August opening weekend. At this point, we'll never know; however if you're curious to see how The Meg turned out in PG-13-O-Vision, you can see the film in theaters now.

Zac Efron Says The Greatest Showman Sequel Could Still Happen

Zac Efron is currently out and about promoting his Ted Bundy flick Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, but when it comes to Zafron, a lot of people still have The Greatest Showman tunes on the brain. On the bright side, according to the actor, a sequel to the popular movie could still be in play. He recently said on The Graham Norton Show:

The real answer is 'could be. I'm not sure. I'm being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure But I think someone is working on a treatment for something... I know they are, they're working on a treatment for something.

Speaking on a couch with some other big name actors, including Matthew Broderick, Zac Efron explained what he knows about a potential sequel to the 2017 musical. It's honestly amazing that we could be talking about a sequel these days, given where the movie was when it first kicked off in theaters.

Honestly, when The Greatest Showman first premiered, it wasnt to an auspicious start. The movie routinely was in third or fourth place at the box office in its first few weeks in theaters at the end of 2017, as it competed with the likes of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle and Pitch Perfect 3. Then a funny thing started happeningpeople kept going to see it.

In fact, the movie remained in the Top 10 domestically through the weekend of March 2-4 in 2018, a weekend in which Black Panther was already out and dominating.

Clearly, theres an appetite for more tunes set in the world of The Greatest Showman. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the music for the film, after gaining fame from creating original music for Smash and La La Land.

However, if youve seen the musical movie, you should already know that it covers a pretty large span of time in the life of the circus dreamer. We get to see P.T. Barnums early failures, his big dreams and his big successes. Toward the end and spoilers--fictional character Phillip Carlyle (played by Zac Efron) ends up getting involved as a partner and takes over the open-air circus while Barnum takes a step back to spend more time with his family.

Its hard to tell exactly where a sequel could go with the narrative, but Zac Efron also told Graham Norton that he would be game to work opposite Hugh Jackman and with the music and writing team again, noting though that scheduling could eventually be a problem.

Hugh (Jackman) is working on all sorts of things including a one man show. Whats next? I dont know but I hope there is a sequel.

I think a lot of people hope there is a sequel. Although in real life, P.T. Barnums story wasnt all about overcoming obstacles, the musical narrative really entranced people. It helps that circus set pieces and costumes are lovely and lively. It also helps that the music is so catchy, leading to group sing-a-long screenings.

It was a good holiday season at the movies the year The Greatest Showman came out, but in particular that movie had staying power because it became a cultural film that people could experience together in groups or with one or two of their friends. In turn, the soundtrack became a success and the music for the movie was everywhere.

Part of this could be because the whole thing was originally conceived as a Broadway musical, and there has been some talk about turning the movie into a stage production, as well. So, theoretically even if a sequel does not end up happening, the movie could branch out into other mediums.

Is The Cast On Board For A Greatest Showman Sequel?Several other people related to the movie, from director Michael Gracey to Hugh Jackman himself, have expressed optimism about telling more of the story about the famed circus. Jackman previously revealed:

If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I'd get the top hat back out. It's clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters. I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life.

This was a passion project for all of the people involved. The movie was also seven years in the making, so it's no real surprise that people related to the movie might have enthusiasm toward doing more, whether that be Zac Efron or Hugh Jackman. Some time after Jackman made the above comment, Gracey also confirmed that discussions were underway about producing a script for another movie. Now, Efron has said something similar.

Talk is not the same as forward movement, unfortunately. Its also probably worth pointing out that The Greatest Showman was a 20th Century Fox movie, so if this project were to move forward, it would have to nab the greenlight from parent company Disney these days. Disney actually recently cut a few Fox movies from its docket, and it's been hard to tell what the company has been championing in terms of projects and franchises from Fox so far.

That said, The Greatest Showman is in a lot of ways like many Disney movies. Its fun, its mostly family-friendly and it has musical components (and dancing, don't forget the dancing). Most importantly, in a world that is chock full of PG-13 movies, The Greatest Showman was a rare PG outing that didn't feel as if it were just for kids. Clearly it's a likable property, but figuring out what a sequel would be about that would make sense given the historical premise could be a real challenge.

Why Star Wars Was Right To Cancel The Boba Fett Movie

The Star Wars spin-off films hit a roadblock early this year in the form of Solo: A Star Wars Story. It turns out that having Star Wars in the title doesn't translate to automatic success anymore. Solo underperformed at the box office, and it was rumored that Lucasfilm was seriously reconsidering how it handles its spin-off films from now on. To that end, it was recently confirmed that the Boba Fett movie is no longer happening and while this upset some fans, this was absolutely the right decision because the character's too thin for a feature.

Earlier this week, journalist Erick Weber tweeted that Star Wars boss Kathleen Kennedy had confirmed to him that the Boba Fett spin-off movie was "100% dead." Doesn't leave much wiggle room, does it?

The news came as a surprise to some. A movie about Boba Fett was one of the most popular choices for a spin-off. The ruthless bounty hunter has been a fan-favorite ever since his first theatrical appearance in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and people have been asking to see more of him for YEARS. The spin-offs gave the best opportunity to do that, but now Lucasfilm appears to have pulled the plug on the project.

Fans shouldn't despair though. This is a pretty good sign for Lucasfilm's new attitude toward its Star Wars projects, and it could be a signal that more original and exciting films are on the way.

Some readers may be wondering what all the hubbub is with Boba Fett. That guy died, right? Yes, if you don't know anything about Star Wars Legends, the now non-canon series of books chronicling the adventures of Luke, Han, and Leia post-Original Trilogy. In one of these books, Boba Fett crawls out of the sarlacc pit that swallowed him whole in Return of the Jedi, and then went on to have more adventures and once again butt heads with Han Solo. People had hoped this content would be the focus of a spin-off film or a prequel about the bounty hunter's younger days.

The problem with that though is that it's too predictable of an approach. Lucasfilm picked the most obvious characters to center a Star Wars movie around. They weren't stretching their imaginations much when they picked favorite characters like Han Solo, Obi-Wan, and Boba Fett for spin-offs. While ultimately it comes down to the people making the movie and the content put up on screen, a Boba Fett movie was already off to a rough start because this character is paper thin when compared to Han Solo or Obi-Wan.

Boba Fett is surface level cool. He's got a really badass and brilliant design with cool weapons that have kept this character alive with fans. However, in the context of the movies, he does next to nothing. He barely has any dialogue! The most action he gets to do is fly to his death after he was shot down by a blind guy. His death was comic relief, but the adoration for the character never died with him.

That's not to say that a movie can't give him some dimension. A blank canvas means that you can draw anything, but if you go too crazy, then you run the risk of creating an uncharacteristic version of an already beloved character. Looking cool might not be enough of a building block to make Boba Fett compelling enough for a two-hour runtime, and this particular character might be better served by sticking to the supporting cast.

I don't think it's too much of a coincidence that of the two spin-offs released so far, the most successful one by far is Rogue One, a movie that stars entirely original Star Wars characters. The film itself was flawed, but it was exciting to see a Star Wars adventure with fresh characters. It made the movie a bit more exciting in the lead up to its release date, but with a Boba Fett movie, it's hard to see how it could build that same amount of anticipation.

If fans are genuinely disappointed that Boba isn't back on the big screen, he looks to be a significant influence for The Mandalorian, the TV show being developed by Jon Favreau. The show follows an unnamed Mandalorian gunfighter with a clear Boba Fett influence. For Lucasfilm, it was either this or Boba Fett, and it says a lot that they thought this assumably original story was a higher priority than making Boba Fett. If some fans are hungry from bounty hunter action (as I think a lot of us are), this show will likely scratch that itch.

There's also the fact that what Lucasfilm needs to do is drum up excitement for new Star Wars movies and Boba Fett isn't the best choice to do that. He appeals to a very select crowd, and general audience members likely don't have much memory of him. Boba doesn't have the same broad appeal as Han Solo does, so he isn't the best choice when it comes to getting butts in seats. Then again, Solo wasn't really able to do that either.

It's not like there aren't other options for Star Wars fans to get a dose of Boba Fett shot into their systems. The character exists in tons of different comics and books that people can read. Boba Fett also appears in a few episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an excellent animated TV show set during the prequel trilogy. Fett is still a kid in those episodes, and isn't quite flying around with a jetpack, but he had a solid episode or two.

Maybe with the right actor, writer, and director, a Boba Fett movie could have worked. James Mangold was circling the project, and after Logan, that could have been exciting. However, Lucasfilm decided not to take the risk and to focus their energies on other projects.

Does this mean that a Boba Fett movie will never happen? It's tough to say, but it's highly unlikely that we'll see the last of the Mandalorian bounty hunter. He'll show up in Star Wars media until our sun finally blows up. If Solo 2 ever happens, I would bet that there's a spot on the cast for old Boba, because every movie needs a guy with a dope look.
