Tyler Perrys Favorite Character To Play In A Madea Family Funeral

Tyler Perry has had a long career in film, TV, and theater. Throughout it all there has been one common thread: his signature character Madea. Starting with his 199 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Perry has often embodied Madea's body, voice, and signature lexicon. Madea first became a household name with 2005's Diary of a Mad Black Woman, kickstarting a film franchise in the process. Perry will soon say goodbye to that character, with A Madea Family Funeral marking his last onscreen appearance as Madea Simmons.

While Tyler Perry has made a long career out of playing Madea, he's also inhabited a variety of other characters throughout the Madea franchise. He plays a total of four characters in A Madea Family Funeral, and I recently asked Perry about which was his favorite in the upcoming release, where he told me:

Heathrow. Introducing a new character who gets to say things and be irreverent and fun. I think he and Joe need to go to Vegas for something, man. It would be great.

Tyler Perry may be playing Madea for the umpteenth time, but he gets to flex new muscles by introducing Heathrow to audiences. Heathrow creates more opportunities for laughs, and shows what a comedic chameleon Perry has become through the Madea movies. And its a character that is sure to make a splash once A Madea Family Funeral arrives in theaters.

Heathrow can be shown in the first trailers for A Madea Family Funeral, hinting at the potential scene stealer. Heathrow's many years in life hasn't been kind to him, and he finds himself physically handicapped throughout the film. In addition to using an electric wheelchair to get around, he also needs a throat back to help him talk to the various relatives that make up the cast. He lost his voice box due to his wild lifestyle, but that's not stopping Heathrow from being the same dog he was in his youth during A Madea Family Funeral.

You can check out my conversation with Tyler Perry about Heathrow below.

After the decades of work, it's refreshing to see Tyler Perry still so passionate about the Madea franchise. This type of passion makes his upcoming departure from playing Madea a bit sad. But considering his work in Oscar-bait projects like Gone Girl and Vice, perhaps the director/writer/actor is ready to free up his schedule.

A Madea Family Funeral will arrive in theaters on March 1st. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

First Look At Nicole Kidmans Atlanna In Aquaman

By  at December 05, 2019  , , ,  No comments
First Look At Nicole Kidmans Atlanna In Aquaman

Following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry made his full DC Extended Universe debut last year in Justice League, and his background were briefly touched upon. But it will be in the Aquaman movie later this year that Arthur's origins are deeply explored, and that will include meeting his mother, Queen Atlanna, played by Nicole Kidman. With six months to go until Aquaman's release, we finally have our first look at how Kidman will look as Atlantean royalty on the big screen.

Nicole Kidman already had some superhero movie experience under her belt with her role as Dr. Chase Meridian in 1995's Batman Forever. For Aquaman, though, she's playing someone who was already an established comic book character. As you can see on the EW magazine cover, Kidman's Atlanna, alongside Jason Momoa as Aquaman's eponymous protagonist and Amber Heard as Mera, certainly looks regal, though as Kidman mentioned last year, she can hold her own in a fight. The blonde hair is also in keeping with her usual depictions in the comics, although Atlanna in the New 52 continuity boasted pure white hair in the present day. The above cover is one of many Aquaman pictures that EW included in its new issue, which also included our first peek at Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta.

Just like in the DC Comics pages, Jason Momoa's iteration of Aquaman is the son of Atlanna, an Atlantean, and Thomas Curry, a human who's being played by Temuera Morrison in the upcoming movie. As we learned in Justice League, Atlanna was forced to give up Arthur (his Atlantean name being Orin) when she feared that his half-human, half-Atlantean heritage would place him in danger, and Arthur was subsequently raised by Thomas. Traditionally Atlanna eventually dies, but in the New 52 universe, it was revealed that she'd faked her death to escape Atlantis. It remains to be seen if Atlanna is still alive in the present day DCEU or if she died after handing young Arthur off to Thomas.

No specific plot details for Aquaman have been revealed yet, but the story will involve Arthur Curry finally embracing the Atlantean throne, only to have to prevent the Atlanteans from attacking the surface dwellers, who continue to pollute the seven seas. His's two chief adversaries in the movie will be his half-brother Orm, better known as Ocean Master (Atlanna is also his mother), and ruthless treasure hunter David Kane, a.k.a. Black Manta. Aquaman's lineup of characters also includes Atlantean advisor Nuidis Vulko, Xebellian king Nereus, Men-of-War leader Murk, Black Manta's father Jesse Kane and Dr. Stephen Shin.

Aquaman will make a splash in theaters on December 21. For all the latest updates concerning the underwater blockbuster and other upcoming DC movies, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

How Anne Hathaway Feels About The Negative Serenity Reviews

How Anne Hathaway Feels About The Negative Serenity Reviews

Anne Hathaway has a new movie coming out this weekend starring herself and Matthew McConaughey and she wants people to see it, whether or not the critics like it. In fact, she took to social this week to address the critical reviews and how she feels about the way reviews have panned out for Serenity, noting,

We keep it real around here: some critics get Serenity and, like me, find it interesting, moving, ambitious and different, and for some it just doesnt work.

Reviews really started breaking for Serenity yesterday. Currently, the movie is only running at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes for its critical score. Our own Mike Reyes gave the movie a middling 2.5 stars, and though the movie seems to have some fans who like the bonkers premise of Serenity, its not expected to win the box office this weekend.

Speaking on Instagram, Anne Hathaway also made it clear that she signed on to the movie because she believes in it and wants her fans to know a lot of people who worked on the movie believe in it too.

Thats cool there is no failure, only learned events, not everyone has to like everything and the critical response doesnt change my feelings about the movie. However, other peoples time and money are not to be taken for granted, so I just want to be clear: I endorse the movie, many critics dont.

Anne Hathaway was previously part of Oceans 8, a movie that also found itself earning middling reviews. One of her co-stars in that movie, Mindy Kaling, was unhappy with the critical response and unabashed about talking about it. In this case, Anne Hathaway decided she needed to address the critical response.

It should be noted that while weve seen a wave of movies with low critical scores and at least relatively high audience scores, Serenity isnt one of them. The audience roundup for the movie is only at 38%. That could change as more people catch the flick on opening weekend and well keep you updated if it does.

In the meantime, Serenity will be competing with the likes of Glass and some Oscar nominee wide releases. (The Kid Who Would Be King is also out, but its not really even in the same ball park in terms of audience.) Well let you know how the box office pans out at the end of the weekend. Early reports indicate Glass will repeat as the big winner this weekend and The Kid Who Will Be King could open higher than Serenity as well, and The Upside still made good money last week. So, we'll have to wait and see where Serenity lands.

Stay tuned for more news on the latest movies and take a look at the rest of 2019's releases with our full movies schedule.
