April Might Have A Superhero Problem

We've reached a point where comic book movies are no longer a once a year treat or even a seasonal affair. These kinds of cinematic stories have become so popular over the last decade that not only are several studios churning out one or several of them each year, but they also feel comfortable releasing them outside of the usual summer window. Which brings us to an interesting predicament in 2019: April, usually one of the quieter months for movies, is bringing forth three comic book movies: Shazam!, Hellboy and Avengers: Endgame, and that could result in an oversaturation problem.

Three comic book companies are being represented on the big screen in April: Shazam! for DC, Hellboy for Dark Horse and Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. All three of these movies have wildly different stories and, to a lesser extent, tones, so at least moviegoers won't be getting one rehash after another. Still, it is strange that these three are all opening within weeks of each other, and this lineup didn't even exist until recently.

Shazam!'s release date, April 5, has been set in stone for a long time, but Hellboy had originally been slated to come out this Friday, only to be moved to April 12 last September. Avengers: Endgame was initially supposed to come out May 3, but, just like it did for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel moved Endgame up a week, to April 26. Now that we find ourselves in this predicament, how will each of these movies be affected, if at all?

Let's start with Shazam!, one of the first DC Extended Universe movies to be announced back in late 2014. Repeatedly described as "Big, but with super powers," Billy Batson's origin story looks to be a humorous and lighthearted entry within this superhero universe, and since it's arriving five months after Aquaman (which has been doing gangbusters at the box office), maybe that will help draw in even larger crowds. Shazam! also has the benefit of coming out at the beginning of April, so while it will eventually have to contend with Hellboy and Avengers: Endgame later in the month, they won't interfere with its opening weekend.

That being said, it's possible that Shazam!'s performance could be affected by the presence of a different Captain Marvel, as the World's Mightiest Mortal was originally known. Carol Danvers' Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story opens in early March, and if this movie performs anything like Black Panther or Avengers: Infinity War did last year, people might still be checking it out a month after its release, which could in turn pivot people away from Shazam! But there's no guarantee that will happen, and since Shazam! is definitely a bigger release than its opening weekend competition, Pet Sematary (unless that happens to do IT numbers), then the Big Red Cheese should be fine.

Moving on to Hellboy, this is definitely the movie that stands the biggest chance of crashing and burning. Although Big Red led two of his own movies last decade and they earned a lot of positive reception, neither of those them made that much at the box office, which is ultimately the reason why Guillermo del Toro was never able to make Hellboy III. Hellboy is also arguably Dark Horse Comics' most well-known property, but even that doesn't mean much compared to the likes against Marvel and DC.

Shazam may not be one of the A-list DC Comics heroes, but at least he has the benefit of being part of an existing franchise. While this Hellboy reboot is undoubtedly intended to be the first of a new film series or perhaps even an entire cinematic universe, as much as the character and his mythology has a dedicated fanbase, it's still overall a niche following. Now that Shazam! is opening a week ahead of time, it's possible that some of the audience that missed out on Shazam! opening weekend will check it out instead of Hellboy. The David Harbour-starring vehicle definitely stands at a disadvantage, which is a shame because questionable tone aside, it is different from the usual cinematic superhero fare we receive.

Finally, there's Avengers: Endgame, the final chapter of the MCU's Phase 3. If you thought Avengers: Infinity War was a gargantuan release, Endgame is expected to meet that level or surpass it, and we don't even know any specific story details yet. Whether you like the MCU or not, this is the biggest superhero franchise around, and Endgame is the culmination of so many events and plot threads from the last decade. It may be opening at the end of April now, but Endgame should still be considered the kickoff of the summer movie season.

Shazam! and Hellboy may be preceding Avengers: Endgame, but the effect those two movies will have on it will be slim to none. The MCU has too many dedicated fans, and considering how Avengers: Infinity War ended, you can be sure that nearly all of the people who saw that movie, whether they're hardcore Marvel enthusiasts or general moviegoers, will want to know how that story wraps up. But hey, Infinity War wasn't directly preceded by any superhero movies, so perhaps Endgame will fare differently.

Ultimately, it would have been better if these movies had opened on different months, but unless there's an abrupt, last minute change, that's not going to happen. And it's not like we haven't been in a situation similar to this before; Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Aquaman opened within a week of each other in December, and they both did well for themselves. Perhaps Shazam!, Hellboy and Avengers: Endgame can still all be successful in their own ways. But if I have to pick the movie that stands the best chance of being hindered by this April lineup, it's Hellboy. It's sandwiched between two superhero heavy hitters, and that's a problem.

We're only several months away from seeing how this all pans out, but if you're looking forward to Shazam!, Hellboy and/or Avengers: Endgame, make sure you pay to see them in theaters to show your support. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the latest updates concerning these movies and other upcoming comic book adaptations. Doctor Strange's Director Has Returned To Twitter

Doctor Strange's Director Has Returned To Twitter

Sometimes you just need to chill out and get away from the rat race of modern society to seek out spiritual renewal in Kamar-taj. Likewise, sometimes you just need a break from social media. Such was the case for Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson who left Twitter over the summer, in the wake of fellow MCU director James Gunn's firing over resurfaced offensive tweets. The director stayed on Instagram, but he has is apparently now ready to wade back in to social media's most treacherous waters. Scott Derrickson returned to Twitter. Take a look:

He never gave a specific reason for leaving Twitter-- other than it is Twitter. But after a bit of a hiatus, Scott Derrickson is back, much to the delight of fans. The gif in his return tweet is a clip from Cape Fear, showing the back of Robert De Niro's Max Cady. The tattoo shows the scales of justice with truth and justice perfectly balanced (as all things should be). Maybe this is Scott Derrickson's way of making a statement about his return and social media's role in objective truth. Or maybe he is hinting that Doctor Strange 2 will be a courtroom drama with Robert De Niro joining the cast. He is an MCU director, so such speculation is mandatory. Maybe it is just that he is back on Twitter, so why not show a gif of a back, makes total sense. Although the way he put the letters is a bit mysterious.

Scott Derrickson has historically been a great follow on Twitter for MCU fans, as he has frequently referenced Doctor Strange and teased certain things, in addition to giving his takes on film and TV. Also, like James Gunn, Scott Derrickson has been very outspoken politically on Twitter. So hopefully that doesn't cause any problems because the resurfacing of James Gunn's Tweets was a response to the political opinions he expressed online.

We've been waiting for some time to hear about if and when Doctor Strange 2 is going to happen, and if Scott Derrickson will return as director. Interestingly, a month or so ago, during his Twitter hiatus, Scott Derrickson made a cryptic post on Instagram showing Doctor Strange and teasing "See you in September." At the time, we speculated that this could mean the beginning of production on Doctor Strange 2. Well, it's September and Scott Derrickson has returned to Twitter. He also posted this Cape Fear reference on his Instagram with the same caption. I don't know what that means, but the tinfoil hat is definitely on and the hope is that this return to Twitter is prelude to some sort of exciting announcement, like perhaps Doctor Strange 2 taking Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's place on Marvel's Phase 4 calendar.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated if Scott Derrickson is doing more than just messing with us. You can check out our guide for all the latest goings on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and hop over to the release schedule to see all the biggest movies still to come this year.

Bradley Cooper Changed Up A Star Is Borns Ending Late Into Filming

Bradley Cooper Changed Up A Star Is Borns Ending Late Into Filming

Spoilers ahead for A Star Is Born.

With holiday releases just a few weeks away, it seems that this year's awards season has officially begun. Then again, it could technically have started back in October, when Bradley Cooper's directorial debut A Star Is Born first arrived in theaters. The musical drama has Oscar noms written all over it, between the ambitious cinematography, groundbreaking roles for Cooper and Lady Gaga, and the soaring soundtrack.

One of the most powerful moments in A Star Is Born comes from its final sequence, where Ally belts out the anthem "I'll Never Love Again", the song her late husband Jackson wrote for her. While the sequence provided the moment Ally's star was born, it turns out that Bradley Cooper wasn't sure about which track to put in the finale. As Lady Gaga recently revealed:

The way Bradley chose to end the film was extremely of the times. It was an unorthodox way, but it was the authentic way. And it changed as we were filming. The script was being rewritten and we had a trove of songs, so even on the day [of shooting], Bradley would be like, 'No, we're going to do this song. Not this song. Switch it out.' I'd be in my trailer at the piano, getting ready.

Now this is interesting. Bradley Cooper's multifaceted role in A Star Is Born has been recounted leading up to the film's release, but it appears that the actor/director was also living in the moment and making changes late into the game. What's more, it didn't seem to bother Lady Gaga in the slightest, once again proving how well their collaboration worked on the project.

And in the end, Bradley Cooper likely chose the right finale with "I'll Never Love Again." In addition to giving Lady Gaga's Ally an 11 o'clock number that shows off her vocal range, it also provided one more emotional gut punch for the audience. Because just as the song reaches its final chorus, the scene shifts to Jackson clunking out the tune on the piano, and singing to his wife. She sheds a silent tear, and you get one final memory of the love story that just took up the last 135 minutes of music and drama.

After showing Jackson's original performance of the unfinished song, the camera once again cuts back to Ally's perspective, as she recovers from the emotional and vocally challenging number. The protagonist then looks into the camera, and just like that, the titular star is born.

A Star Is Born is full of musical numbers that are already iconic, but "I'll Never Love Again" has its own special place in the Oscar-bait project. While Bradley Cooper may have been flirting with a few different tracks, having Ally complete Jackson's original song brought the story full circle. While Ally's career was kickstarted when Jackson finished "Shallow", her completed version of "I'll Never Love Again" is the final step toward the superstardom she was meant to achieve.

Lady Gaga's revelation to THR is sure to pique the interests of little monsters out there, as well as moviegoers who enjoyed her performance in A Star Is Born. The movie's soundtrack is quite popular, with "Shallow" currently getting airtime on mainstream radios, in addition to streaming numbers. As such, many fans will be eager to know what other songs might have ended up being A Star Is Born's finale. And while it might have been a cut song, there's another possibility from the soundtrack.

If Ally's goodbye to Jackson wasn't "I'll Never Love Again", smart money says it would have ended up being "Is That Alright?" The powerful ballad plays during the credits of A Star Is Born, and even made the rounds in commercials ahead of the film's release. It shows a different side of Gaga's voice, although she still gets the chance to belt out some powerful notes throughout its run. And the lyrics also would have worked in context with the movie's third act.

Much like "I'll Never Love Again", credit song "Is That Alright?" speaks to the devotion and love shared between Ally and Jackson Maine. The couple built a life together, with music and empathy at the heart of their relationship. The lyrics to "Is That Alright?" seemingly speaks to the future they could have had, if Jackson hadn't tragically taken his own life.

In addition to directing, writing, and starring in A Star Is Born, Bradley Cooper was also intimately involved in the music of the film. Despite not previously being a musician, he collaborated with the likes of Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson to craft the film's soundtrack, and decide how they'd be weaved into the project. It overall sounds like an extremely intense process, and it should be fascinating to see how much it pays off once ceremonies like the Golden Globes and Academy Awards begin.

Both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga seem like shoe-ins for leading actor nominations, as A Star Is Born has been both a critical and financial success. Add in the narrative of both performers stepping out of their comfort zone, and it seems like a story that might end with the duo snatching a few trophies in the coming months. You can't deny that Cooper and Gaga put a ton of work into A Star Is Born, and they've luckily both been getting plenty of accolades and praise thrown their way.

The movie is putting some weight behind "I'll Never Love Again", as its one of the three songs that is being pushed for a Best Song nomination. A Star Is Born anthem "Shallow" is also another prime candidate, as well as Ally's first breakout song "Always Remember Us This Way". Bradley Cooper only appears in one of those tracks, with the soundtrack's potential nominations showing the musical talents of Lady Gaga.

Alas, we'll have to wait patiently to see how nominations work for both the Oscars and Golden Globes. Nomination-bait movies are beginning to be released after A Star Is Born, so all eyes are on how it will shake down. Be sure to check back with CinemaBlend for updates on all things movies. And check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.
