Why Creed II's Director Almost Turned Down Making The Sequel

Why Creed II's Director Almost Turned Down Making The Sequel

Steven Caple Jr. took over directing duties from Ryan Coogler for Creed II -- the sequel to the very successful Creed -- but it took some persuading for him to take the job. The first movie made a healthy $173.5 million worldwide, with rave reviews. So expectations for the sequel were high to begin with. On top of that, the sequel would have to be finished in just under a year, which initially made Caple hesitate before accepting the job.

I was excited, but at the same time, I'm like, 'Man, this is a franchise that's good. I don't want to hurt it. I don't want to risk it due to the short time window we had to shoot. And I don't know whether or not they're gonna allow me to be me. I really want my voice to come off.'

In an interview with Vulture, Steven Caple Jr. described how he began his journey directing Creed II, and how he was reluctant to take the job at first. Caple first learned that he was in the running for Creed II around Thanksgiving of last year. At the time, he had only directed one feature -- the indie skateboard drama The Land -- but he went to USC's School of Cinematic Arts with Ryan Coogler, who recommended him as director. If Caple accepted the gig, he would have to enter production almost immediately and deliver the movie in under a year.

That's high-turnover in the film world, so Steven Caple Jr. did have a concern over whether he had enough time to deliver a quality film. He was also nervous about taking over the franchise and not being able to put his stamp on it. However, Ryan Coogler and co-writer/co-star Sylvester Stallone assured him that he would have room to make the film his own.

Ryan understood that. He didn't want me to make Creed all over again. He said, 'You definitely have to do you in order for us to win.' That was the same attitude Sly had. He was like, 'Hey man, for this movie to do well, it has to have your stamp on it.' That made me feel comfortable. Before Thanksgiving last year, I had these meetings on a Tuesday and a Wednesday. Then the city shut down. And Thursday, Friday, Saturday, I was just with my family really contemplating whether or not I was gonna take this project or not.

Obviously, Steven Caple Jr. decided to join the film, and so far it seems to have worked out well for the director! Early reviews for the film have been positive, and the movie seems to appeal to fans of Creed and the older Rocky fans, due to the connection to Rocky IV.

Creed II arrives in theaters on November 21. For more movies to look forward to this holiday season, enjoy our holiday preview guide.

Blumhouse Doesn't Actually Have The Rights To Make Halloween Sequels Yet

Blumhouse Doesn't Actually Have The Rights To Make Halloween Sequels Yet

Last year, Blumhouses Halloween reboot-quel from director David Gordon Green was a hit with critics and a record-breaker at the box office. Given that level of success and the fact that the horror genre is built for it, you would think that a Halloween sequel would be no-brainer, but it turns out that we shouldnt get too excited just yet. Addressing the initial plan to shoot two Halloween movies at once, producer Jason Blum explained the hurdles to a potential sequel:

We had talked about it but right now were not shooting any Halloween movies right now because we dont have deal rights to the sequels. But I certainly hope to make 10 more but Ill start with one more.

I think many people probably assumed that a Halloween sequel was a foregone conclusion given that it made $253.7 million on a $10 million budget, but it turns out that the situation is a bit more complicated than that. The fan sentiment and financial incentive might be there, yet as Jason Blum told Moviefone, Blumhouse actually doesnt have the rights to make sequels at the moment.

As it seems is often the case with big name properties, the legalities of rights issues must be sorted out before a film can make it to the big screen. In this case, Blumhouse was able to make Halloween, but desire alone wont be enough to get a sequel made; it has to get the rights to make sequels first.

Fortunately, for fans that want to see more of what Blumhouse can do with this property, the desire to make more films is clearly there. Jason Blum is ambitiously hoping that they can make 10 more Halloween movies, thus basically doubling the Halloween films that have been made thus far. Hes clearly got big plans for Halloween, but at the moment, Jason Blum is just taking it one at a time and hoping to make a sequel to the 2018 film.

So while there is no guarantee that Blumhouse will make another Halloween sequel, Jason Blum is trying, and with the first films success, there is a lot of money to be made. I imagine a deal will get worked out sooner or later so that money doesnt get left on the table.

It seems Blumhouse might be bullish about getting to make a sequel too. It was reported last week that Narcos: Mexico producer Scott Teems is in talks to write the Halloween sequel. Many of the people involved with the first film seem down to return should a sequel happen, so now its just a waiting game to see if it does.

As far as where a sequel could take the story, it's hard to say. Danny McBride, who was one of the writer's on the first film, has some ideas, but since he isn't writing the sequel as far as we know, it's unclear whether those ideas will be used. We also know that there are plans in place for Allyson's boyfriend Cameron, played by Dylan Arnold.

Blumhouses latest horror film is the sequel Happy Death Day 2U. Check out what we thought of the flick and head over to our release schedule to see all the biggest movies heading to theaters in 2019.
