How Spike Lee Got An Unreleased Prince Song Into BlackKklansman

How Spike Lee Got An Unreleased Prince Song Into BlackKklansman

While the film world is currently dominated by thrilling franchises and shared universes, there are certain filmmakers who are essentially living royalty. One of them is director/writer/producer Spike Lee, who has made hyper stylized dramas that often explore the black experience in America. While he's been busy with his Netflix series She's Gotta Have It, a new Spike Lee joint will soon hit theaters with BlackKklansman. Based on a crazy real life story, BlackKklansman follows an African American detective in the 1970's who infiltrates a violent Ku Klux Klan chapter. Like all Spike Lee joints, the soundtrack is a character within itself, and the credits have a particularly exciting track: an unreleased Prince cover. I recently spoke with Lee about the film's soundtrack, where he revealed how that previously hidden song made its way to BlackKklansman.

This is something I've not really said, so you'll be the first to hear it. Me and my brother Prince were close. And while we were in post-production, my good friend Troy Carter at Spotify said, because he's worked with Prince's estate, they had found a cassette in the vault. And he said 'I think I have a song for the end credits' And it was that song. The end credits 'Mary Don't You Weep', which is a Prince rendition of an old negro spiritual. And me and Troy talked and said 'I believe Prince wanted you to have that song.' Because he had 10,000 cassettes in the vault in Minnesota at this place. And for them to discover the cassette with that song on it, that is not a coincidence. And that song just so much captures the movie.

This is some serious movie magic. While music and style icon Prince tragically passed away in 2016, there are still tons of unused songs and footage of the legend at work. And since Spike Lee had a colleague who could connect him with the Prince estate, Spike Lee was able to bring a new Prince song to BlackKklansman, no doubt providing a cathartic bookend to the politically charged project.

Spike Lee joints always have iconic soundtracks, with the director often hand picking the songs used in his film and TV ventures. BlackKklansman actually has much fewer songs than Lee's fans are accustomed to. But each song is used purposefully, and Lee's restraint makes the choices feel more deliberate and focused. And adding an unheard Prince track at the last minute is just the icing on the cake of another visionary project by Lee.

You can see my conversation with Spike Lee below.

Ultimately, the use of Prince's unused "Mary Don't You Weep" is the final coda to an emotional, funny, and political movie. And while there's no big post-credits scene a la the MCU, hopefully Prince's track will entice moviegoers to sit through the entirety of the credits.

Spike Lee's BlackKklansman will arrive in theaters on August 10, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Johnny Depp Says Hes Returning For Fantastic Beasts 3

Johnny Depp Says Hes Returning For Fantastic Beasts 3

We've known for quite some time that we would be getting a bunch of Fantastic Beasts movies, but exactly who would be along for the entire journey was less clear. While we all expected Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander to be there, the rest were up in the air, but it looks like Johnny Depp has now confirmed he'll be back for the third film in the franchise. In a recent interview, Depp stated...

The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything. So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment, which I think we start the middle of next year.

Shortly before the release of the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, J.K. Rowling revealed that this new franchise within her Wizarding World would take five movies. Johnny Depp, for his part, only appeared at the tail end of that movie, but in doing so we learned that another major actor Colin Ferrell, would not be returning for future installments. As such, it was far from certain who would be in for the long term and who would not.

It seemed likely that Johnny Depp would be back for additional films, but that wasn't confirmed previously. The belief is that the rest of the Fantastic Beasts franchise will deal with the reign of terror caused by Depp's Gellert Grindelwald, though since we don't have a lot of details about where and when the other films will be set, it's still possible Grindelwald will be dealt with sooner than that. Alternatively, it's possible Grindelwald might not appear in all the films, jumping in and out as the story requires.

However, based on what Johnny Depp tells Collider he is scheduled to begin filming Fantastic Beasts 3, subtitle to be named later, at some point next year, with the film probably set to open in November of 2020, in order to keep these things coming out at a regular pace.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes place years after the first film, and a continent away. It also appears to be much more straightforward in its story. While the first film basically saw Newt Scamander happen into a much larger story about the conflict between the Wizarding World and the normal world by chasing after lost creatures, the sequel will be dealing with the aftermath of that and see Newt take on a much more focused role.

Not everybody has been happy with the casting of Johnny Depp in such a major franchise, so the fact that he appears to be in this for the long haul won't be good news for some, but he has J.K. Rowling's support, and is still a huge movie star, which is probably all that really matters.

Ryan Reynolds Final Opinion About The Wolverine And Deadpool Crossover

Ryan Reynolds Final Opinion About The Wolverine And Deadpool Crossover

The X-Men franchise is a sprawling landscape of characters, but Deadpool and Wolverine are the two solo acts who dominate the series. Fans have been dying to see a crossover between Wade Wilson and Logan ever since the two first crossed paths (albeit unsuccessfully) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and even Ryan Reynolds is keen on making it happen as well. Alas, it looks like Hugh Jackman's retirement is the thing standing in the way. In a recent interview at the premiere of Deadpool 2, Reynolds concluded:

You know, that's a long-standing dream of mine. Y'know sadly it's Hugh Jackman that's the skin-covered speed-bump on the road to that sort of happiness. We'll see. He hung it up. So, we'll see.

Ryan Reynolds has made no secret of the fact that he wants to see a proper crossover between Wade Wilson and Wolverine. The smartass actor behind the Merc with the Mouth has routinely pleaded with Hugh Jackman for a crossover between their two R-rated X-Men properties, but that process hit a major roadblock last year when Jackman retired from the franchise with Logan. Per his comments to Variety on the matter, Reynolds still remains open to the possibility of getting the Australian actor in on a crossover, but the ball is very much in Jackman's court at this stage of the game.

These pleas have not gone unnoticed by Hugh Jackman in recent days. In fact, the retired Wolverine actor recently addressed Ryan Reynolds' desire to see this crossover during a recent TV appearance, and he humorously shut down his friend and former co-star about the possibility of seeing it happen. So at this point, the odds of it actually coming together seem relatively slim.

Of course, even without the presence of Hugh Jackman or Wolverine in the Deadpool franchise, it looks like the Merc with the Mouth is doing just fine on his own. Deadpool 2 received great reactions from fans on social media after its initial screenings, and the reviews of the film have been largely positive ahead of its release. Getting Hugh Jackman to sign on for a cameo or a full-blown crossover would obviously be a huge win for the Deadpool franchise and fans alike, but it's also clear that the series could easily continue to simply make its current Hugh Jackman/Wolverine jokes and thrive on its own merit without an appearance by Jackman as the adamantium-clawed badass. Either way, the fans would win.

Deadpool 2 finally premieres in theaters later this week on May 18. Check out David Leitch's highly-anticipated X-Men franchise spinoff when it debuts, and then head over to our movie premiere guide to see what other films are set to debut this year!
